This Monday, the Toronto Raptors posted a short teaser video of sorts on their Twitter account, promising their fans that the team would “unleash” its past. The video eventually spread like wildfire on social media. The Raptors did not keep their followers waiting for too long because the very next day they posted another video, showcasing two different alternate uniforms for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. Readers are probably wondering whether it is a mere coincidence that Jordan Brand has just whipped up an Air Jordan 5 GS colorway dubbed “Raptors.” However, there’s no denying that it is inspired the Raptors’ existing uniforms.
One of the two uniforms is the same as the ones worn by the Toronto Huskies during the NBA’s very first season, and arrives just in time to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Toronto Huskies. The second uniform has apparently been designed in celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year on January 28th, which will mark the beginning of the Year of the Rooster. In terms of uniforms, the Toronto Raptors now have a total of six options, including one inspired by Drake’s OVO record label that has even served as a source of inspiration for quite a few Air Jordan renditions too.
While it is certainly a good thing that Jordan Brand is dropping an Air Jordan 5 colorway in Grade School sizes, it is odd that it has not been designed to resemble the Toronto Raptors latest uniforms. Perhaps these kicks had already been whipped up by the time the Raptors introduced their new gear. This Air Jordan 5 GS actually looks similar to the Air Jordan 7 “True Red,” an OG colorway that was also inspired by the Raptors. The nubuck uppers of the Air Jordan 5 are predominantly Black-colored, but the contrasting Red and Purple detailing throughout add a pop of color.
Small-footed Jordans would have probably been expecting that they would be able to get their hands on a pair right away. However, this seeming Toronto Raptors-inspired Air Jordan 5 GS does not arrive at retailers until later next month, specifically on September 17th and it will retailing at a price of $140.
