Back in 2015, Nike introduced the Zoom Soldier 8, which featured the innovative and unique Flyease technology. Tinker Hatfield’s younger brother Tobie Hatfield was the one who designed the sneaker to be accessible enough for people with disabilities, making it possible for them to tie their shoes. One of the highlights of the Zoom Soldier 8 was the subtle zipper wrapped around it heels, which enables wearers to use just one hand to peel the shoe open and close. Most of Jordan Brand’s signature sneakers feature laces. However, it seems that its Air Jordan releases 2018 might include an Air Jordan 1 with a unique zipper lacing system.
Mark Parker, Nike’s CEO, asked Tobie Hatfield to come up with the idea for such footwear seven years prior to the release of the Zoom Soldier 8. The unique thing about the Nike Zoom Solider 8 is that it consists of two hinged Velcro pieces. One piece was wrapped around the sneaker’s heels and the other was wrapped around its insteps. Consequently, wearers had to use just one hand to unzip the sneaker and slip their feet in. The Velcro strap and the zipper would connect at the top of the sneaker, effectively sealing it. So, wearers could unzip the strap without having to yank hard on it.
Considering that the Air Jordan 1 is a classic basketball sneaker, it is not surprising that Jordan Brand has never introduced a zippered variation so far, until recently at least. There is no doubt that the pair of kicks in the above photo is an Air Jordan 1 High, but it seems that Jordan Brand has modified its lacing system to incorporate a zipper into it. Its uppers made to be made up of Black-colored leather and the zipper is covered in a Gold hue. It is also equipped with Red-colored tongue tags, with White appearing over the “Nike Air” branding and the entire out its soles.
So far, it is uncertain if this unique Air Jordan 1 High variation is a custom pair or has actually been designed by Jordan Brand. Hopefully, as more news about upcoming Jordan releases 2018 surfaces, you’ll end up learning whether this sneaker will hit the shelves later this year, so keep checking back.
