During the basketball games back in the 80s, it was rather common for professional basketball players to shatter backboards, in fact, Michael Jordan himself had shattered quite a few backboards back in 1985. The glass backboard is rarely shattered in the basketball games that have been played in recent times. Perhaps Jordan Brand wanted old-school sneakerheads to feel reminiscent about the good ol’ days of basketball when sporting this Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG pair. No wonder this colorway has been dubbed “Shattered Blackboard” and will be hitting the shelves on one of this month’s Jordan release dates 2015.
Perhaps the glass that that today’s backboards are made of is more durable that it used to be back in the mid-90s, or maybe it is due to the fact that basketball players can get fined and/or penalized for doing so. The games of today are nothing like when Shaquille O’Neal shattered a backboard while playing for the Orlando Magic or when Michael Jordan shattered a backboard in Italy back in 1986 during an exhibition game. This particular Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG rendition is a tribute to the latter and draws inspiration from the remarkable spectacle that old-school Jordanheads were able to behold courtesy of MJ himself.
During that exhibition game, Michael Jordan had been wearing a jersey that featured the same bright orange hue that the tumble leather upper of this Air Jordan 1 pair is dressed up in, along with the black and white that were also present on the jersey. The color scheme of this sneaker may even remind sneakerheads of the “Black Toe” colorway of the Jordan 1. The insoles of this Jordan 1 iteration even feature shattered glass graphic to further add life to this sneaker’s theme.
Jordanheads who were not around 30 years or so ago may have missed the golden chance to watch a backboard being shattered live on a basketball court. However, if they love Jordan Brand’s first signature silhouette, then they will enjoy copping this Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Shattered Backboard” that will be arriving at retailers on one of the upcoming Jordan release dates 2015.
