It was back in 2003 when Nike had first teamed up with the OSHU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Ever since, the OSHU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital has managed to raise more than $14 million through their Doernbecher Freestyle program with Nike. Thirteen years have already passed since the inception of the program and it is scheduled to make a comeback before 2016 comes to an end. The 2016 Doernbecher Freestyle Collection includes the Air Huarache Run Ultra, Air Jordan 7, Air Max Zero, Kyrie 2 and the Stefan Janoski Max. Additionally though, a limited Alternate version of the Air Jordan 7 “Doernbecher” will also be among 2016’s upcoming Jordan releases.
The most remarkable thing about the Nike apparel and footwear from the Doernbecher Freestyle program is that they all reflect the individual personality of each child. Many sneaker enthusiasts even begin recognizing the various colorways by the name of the children from the hospital who designed them because of how personalized these kicks tend to be. This year’s young designers seem to have drawn inspiration from things like the airplanes, building blocks, Chicago Bulls, a guitar, Kermit the Frog and lighthouses. Even though these sneakers do not arrive until near the end of the year, Nike’s official website already has further details on each pair.
Sneakerheads who have already gotten a look at this year’s Doernbecher Freestyle Collection likely know what the Air Jordan 7 “Doernbecher” looks like. The sneaker was designed by a 10-year-old boy named Damien Phillips, whose main inspiration was the Chicago Bulls. However, it turns out that he had also designed an Alternate version of his Air Jordan 7 iteration and Jordan Brand will apparently be dropping it in limited numbers. It is a nearly all-Black sneaker with uppers made up of suede and textured leather overlays, with Gold-, Grey- and Red-colored detailing throughout.
All of the gear and sneakers from the 2016 Doernbecher Freestyle Collection are scheduled to become available at Nike.com and select Nike retailers on December 17th. So, perhaps that is the day that this Air Jordan 7 “Doernbecher Alternate” will hit the shelves too.
