Most people believe that the Chinese New Year is somewhat the equivalent of the western New Year, but it is actually more comparable to Christmas. Like Christmas, the Chinese New Year also has a rich history and numerous traditions. The Chinese New Year and Christmas are arguably two of the world’s most important holidays, which is the reason they are somewhat similar but also different. The backstory behind both holidays is quite longstanding. Both holidays have traditions that are celebrated and observe While Holiday Season Air Jordan releases are nothing new, this year Jordan Brand has whipped up an entire 2017 Air Jordan “Chinese New Year” Collection.
Like Christmas, the Chinese New Year also has a great deal of rites and rituals involved in it. The Chinese New Year is a holiday that spans 15 days during which families gather to hang calligraphy and red paper cutouts on their doors, and light up firecrackers and red lanterns. Throughout the holiday, drums are heard on the streets and red lanterns are seen glowing at night. Traditionally, families even exchange gifts between themselves. Adults may exchange alcohol, fruit baskets, sweets, tea, etc., while children receive red envelopes containing money. The Chinese New Year is also about being with loved ones and enjoying the holiday spirit.
It seems that Jordan Brand is really taking an active part in commemorating the upcoming 2017 Chinese New Year by dropping three different Air Jordan releases next month. An adult-sized colorway each of the Air Jordan 12 and the Air Jordan 31, as well as a GS-exclusive iteration of the Air Jordan 12, are a part of the 2017 Air Jordan “Chinese New Year” Collection. The insoles and tongues of both Air Jordan 12 versions feature Chinese characters, while bamboo-like accents can also be spotted on all three sneakers.
Thus, it is obvious that the Chinese New Year and Christmas are rather similar in more ways than one. Coincidentally, Jordan Brand will first drop the 2017 Air Jordan “Chinese New Year” Collection in China on Christmas, i.e. December 25th, and it will once again be available in China on January 7th. The US retail debut of this collection is scheduled to take place on January 28th, so stateside sneakerheads will have to wait a little longer.
