This summer it was revealed that Jeff Green of the Cleveland Cavaliers would remain with his team for another year after the new deal that he signed. However, sneakerheads might recall that Jeff’s fate seemed quite uncertain five years ago prior to the 2011–12 NBA season when a physical revealed that he had a heart defect. He was a member of the Boston Celtics at the time, when Jeff was diagnosed with a dangerous enlargement of one of his aorta’s valves. To memorialize the operating that Jeff Green consequently underwent, Jordan Brand recently gifted him a special Air Jordan 31 PE pair.
Had Jeff Green aorta ruptured, it would have likely been fatal. Fortunately, Jeff Green underwent a successful open heart surgery back in January 2012, which was performed by Dr. Lars Evensson. As a result of the surgery, Jeff missed the entire 2011–12 season, but made a comeback the very next season and played 81 games while still a part of the Boston Celtics. According to Jeff, even though the scar from the surgery has “healed a lot,” he still feels it.
Apparently, even though the scar has healed, it has not really shrunk in size. Jeff claims that the scar will always be a part of him.
In fact, now he has a special PE pair of the Air Jordan 31 to remember his surgery from five years ago and the scar that resulted from it. Although uncertain, it seems that Jeff’s Air Jordan 31 PE is dressed up in the “Home” color scheme of the Cleveland Cavaliers, i.e. Black, Red and White. On the The Players’ Tribune YouTube channel, a video of Jeff showcasing the sneaker was recently uploaded. Each side of the sneaker featured Red-colored stitching, resembling Jeff’s scar. Dr. Lars Evensson’s name can be spotted over the inner sock and the American Heart Association logo accompanies the “Jumpman” branding on the tongues. “I.IX.MMXII,” which is the date of the surgery, is also featured vertically down the heels.
Of course, this Air Jordan 31 PE is more than just a player exclusive; it holds a special significance for Jeff Green. Therefore, it is very unlike that Jordan Brand will drop it, but that does change the fact that it is quite a dope looking colorway.
