Near the end of June, 26 disadvantages students from all across the U.S. received a full ride scholarship to attend college via Jordan Brand’s WINGS program. Since the program was established back in 2015, Jordan Brand has helped more than 200 American students attend 65 different colleges for free. In addition to the financial assistance, recipients of this scholarship also receive community support and mentorship. While there have been Air Jordan “Wings” releases, they had nothing to do with this program, . This time though, Jordan Brand has actually drawn inspiration from its WINGS program for this latest colorway of the Air Jordan 5.
Jordan Brand’s Previous Air Jordan “Wings” Releases
Of course, Jordan Brand’s scholarship program got its name from Michael Jordan’s 72×23 “Wings” poster from back in the early 90s. It was that poster that became the source of inspiration for the Air Jordan 12 “Wings,” which made its retail debut on April 2nd, 2016 at a price of $225. Limited to just 12,000 pairs, one of its highlights was that its all-Black premium leather uppers would reveal an underlying “wings” graphic after suffering enough wear. On May 17th, 2017, Jordan Brand released the Air Jordan 1 High “Wings.” It featured a bronze-like, worn out aesthetic and was limited to 19,400 pairs, which retailed for $200 each.
The Air Jordan 5 “Wings”
The Air Jordan 5 featured here, which is actually draws inspiration from Jordan Brand’s WINGS program, is nothing like those previous two releases but is still equally unique. Overall, its uppers have a plain White base with Turquoise appearing throughout as a secondary hue. However, the element of this iteration that makes it stand out is the graphics that cover most of its uppers and according to @Pinoe77, will vary with each pair. Additionally, its lace locks and side mesh panels have been shaped to resemble wings. It is also equipped with icy translucent outsoles. Currently, it is expected to join the Air Jordan releases 2018 arriving this summer.
