For the past half decade or so, Drake has been one of Jordan Brand’s most coveted collaborator and partner. Jordan Brand’s recent NBA All-Star Weekend Air Jordan releases 2018 also included two OVO x Air Jordan 8 colorways. As has been the case with previous OVO x Jordan Brand releases, one colorway was nearly all-Black while the other was nearly all-White, while both featured varying Gold-colored accents and Red over the branding. Apparently, the insides of the tongues also had “Welcome” embroidered onto them. However, recent reports seem to be suggesting that this highly acclaimed partnership may not last long and might be nearing its culmination.
Jordan Brand’s partnership with Drake can be traced back to somewhere in 2013. Drake has been headlining sneaker blogs like SneakersDog ever since, not only because of the OVO x Air Jordan releases that have been dropped, but also due to the PE pairs that he has collaboratively designed and rocked. Recently, Drake even revealed a never-before-seen sample iteration of the Air Jordan 11 featuring faux snakeskin detailing. Judging from the photo he shared on his Instagram account (@champagnepapi), it appeared to have plain White-colored Cordura uppers, along with mudguards made up of Pink-colored, faux python-textured material. It is uncertain if this sample was an OVO collaboration.
Nonetheless, reports began circulating over the recent NBA All-Star Weekend 2018 that Drake might be parting ways with Jordan Brand. Apparently, Jordan Brand has not been providing Drake enough creative control and as a result, he is not pleased with his current deal with the brand. These reports suggest that Drake might end up joining fellow rappers Pharrell and Kanye West by signing a brand new contract with adidas. If and when this new deal is finalized, Drake will likely have the creative control and freedom he desires to produce his own style of footwear and other products.
If there is any truth behind these reports, the recent NBA All-Star Weekend may have marked the arrival of one of the last Air Jordan releases 2018 to be associated with Drake. The two OVO x Air Jordan 8 colorways mentioned above made their retail debut on February 16th, 2018 and became available at a price of $225 each.
