When Carmelo Anthony enrolled into Sycrause University back in the fall of 2002, their men’s basketball team had never won a national championship in the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament. At the time, the chances of changing in the near future were scarce. Of course, Carmelo Anthony was a freshman, so no one could have foreseen that he would end up forever transforming the Sycrause team and inadvertently the NCAA Tournament. Indeed, he led the Syracuse Orange to their first national championship. April 7, 2018 marked the fifteenth anniversary of that historic victory and Jordan Brand is commemorating it with a special colorway of the Air Jordan 9.
Carmelo Anthony ended up proving that he wasn’t an ordinary freshman. Back during the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament when it was down to the Final Four, Carmelo set a new record by scoring 33 points, with the Syracuse Orange winning against the Texas Longhorns. Carmelo even got into a quarrel with T.J. Ford of the Longhorns during the game after being called “only a freshman.” T.J. Ford did not know how wrong he was he said that. In the final game of the tournament, Carmelo scored 20 points along with 10 rebounds and the Sycrause Orange defeated the Kansas Jayhawks to win their first national championship.
It really has been fifteen years since that game was played and Carmelo Anthony continues to make his mark in the NBA, now as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder. This Air Jordan 9 iteration draws inspiration from the NCAA National Championship trophy and Jordan Brand chose this model because it is Carmelo’s favorite. Dubbed “Mop Melo,” the uppers of this iteration is predominantly clean White. Since the trophy is wooden with gold plating, wood-like detailing can also be spotted over the sneaker, while Metallic Gold covers the lace loops and the midsoles. It is equipped with plain White outsoles too, which featured a Red-colored “Jumpman”.
So far, it is uncertain if this special colorway will be joining April’s Air Jordan releases 2018, however, it will indeed be hitting the shelves eventually. As of now, Jordan Brand has not made any official announcement about the release of this Air Jordan 9 “Mop Melo,” so keep checking back to SneakersDog for more updates.
