Most of those who are reading this probably assume that Valentine’s Day is celebrated all around the world, which is somewhat true. Usually, it is men who buy chocolates, flowers and gifts for their significant others on February 14th, every year. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Japan too, but with a slight difference. As every year, Jordan Brand dropped a special Valentine’s Day release. This year, it was the Air Jordan 8 “Valentine’s Day.” It joined last month’s Air Jordan releases 2018 on February 9th and ended up retailing at a price of $190. Apparently, Jordan Brand brought back the sneaker exclusively in Japan for White Day.
On Valentine’s Day in Japan, it is the women who give chocolates and gifts to men. In fact, addition to giving chocolates to their significant others, women in Japan may even give chocolates to their bosses, close male and female friends, and their colleagues. However, that does not mean that women there do not receive anything in return. They just have to have an entire month for White Day to arrive on March 14th, which is technically the equivalent of how Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the rest of the world. Typically, men give the women flowers, gifts and white chocolate in return for the chocolate they received.
Of course, there is no reason that people in the rest of the world cannot celebrate White Day and many actually do, but it is inherently a Japanese tradition. Hence, it makes sense that although the Air Jordan 8 “Valentine’s Day” is returning, it will only be available in Japan. In case sneakerheads have forgotten, this special Air Jordan 8 colorway was designed to be dressed up completely in the rosy color of love, i.e. Red. One of the unique features of this colorway was that the left and right straps had “Loves me…” and “Loves me not…” printed underneath them.
Sneakerheads may or may not also recall, the Air Jordan 8 “Valentine’s Day” was a women’s exclusive that was available in extended men’s sizing up to 10.5. Many women in Japan may have actually received the sneaker as a gift on White Day, considering that it got restocked there on March 14th, 2018.
