Many sneakerheads probably may not know that the Air Jordan 2 was the model that served as the base for Michael Jordan’s first Player Exclusive sneaker. MJ wore this Air Jordan 2 PE back on September, 1986. It was back on January 18th, 1986 when the Dean E. Smith Center became the home court of the North Carolina Tar Heels and by September of the same year, it became dedicated. A Carolina Pro Alumni basketball game was hosted as a part of the dedication, during which Michael Jordan rocked his Air Jordan 2 PE. That same Air Jordan 2 will be joining upcoming Air Jordan releases 2017.
Collegiate Legends Classic benefit basketball game took place at Pauley Pavilion on June 28th, 1987 between North Carolina and UCLA. Despite being nearly 18 points behind the Bruins alumni during the second half, the Tar Heels alumni were eventually victorious with a score of 116-111. Even athletes that had been a part of the alumni teams back in 1955 had also joined the game. Proceeds from the Carolina Pro Alumni basketball game went to the North Carolina University Fund and UCLA’s Nell and John Wooden Post-Graduate Scholarship, which had just been established at that time.
This year, both North Carolina and UCLA are among the Sweet 16 teams that will be competing in the March Madness Tournament. Instagram user @chickenwop_ recently shared a photo that showcases what appears to be a modern day recreation of Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan 2 PE, which is being fitting referred to as the “Alumni” colorway. Since it is supposed to resemble the original, so it has predominantly clean White-colored uppers. Drawing inspiration from the Chicago Bulls too, it also features Black- and Red-colored detailing, while Light Blue also appears over the heel panels as a nod to the University of North Carolina.
Of course, it should be expected that it is far too early for this sneaker’s release date to be announced, considering that Jordan Brand has not even dropped any hints or published official photos yet. Nonetheless, this Air Jordan 2 “Alumni” will hopefully be among the Air Jordan releases that arrive later this year, so keep checking back.
