The Air Jordan 12 GS “University Blue” has finally joined this month’s Air Jordan releases 2016 by making its retail debut and the sneaker has quite the back story behind it. Children and women should definitely rejoice, considering that Jordan Brand is dropping an Air Jordan 12 exclusively in their sizes. It is probably very disappointing for old-school male Jordanheads since many of them have been waiting for this sneaker to receive the retro treatment once again so they could lace up in it. This is because Carmelo Anthony once rocked a variation of this iteration on the court during the 2003–04 NBA season.
Carmelo Anthony is one of the fortunate and rare NBA athletes to have been a student of Michael Jordan. There is even a Nike commercial featuring both of them, which refers to Carmelo as the “Student.” Therefore, it is not surprising that he ended up not only getting his very own signature sneaker line but has even received a bunch of Air Jordan sneakers that were exclusively designed for him. One such sneaker was the Denver Nuggets-themed Player Exclusive version of this upcoming Air Jordan 12. It is odd that now that Jordan Brand has finally decided to release a variation of it, the sneaker is exclusive coming in GS sizes.
Back on May 15th, 2004, Jordan Brand had actually dropped the Air Jordan 12 Retro “Melo” and it had been available at a retail price of $135. The men’s and women’s versions of that sneaker had been different from each other. Unlike Carmelo’s own PE, this year’s GS-exclusive iteration is obviously not featuring any of his signature branding. Nonetheless, the sneaker’s aesthetic is still quite clean with predominantly plain White leather uppers, while the heels, inner linings, Jordan branding and the sole units are all covered in the University Blue hue. Last but not least, the sneaker is also equipped with gold top eyelets, which adds a premium touch.
Too bad that male Jordanheads will miss out on this opportunity to add a sneaker to their collection that Carmelo Anthony had once worn, even if it was a different, distinct version. While they focus on 2016’s other Air Jordan releases, women and children can head out to select Jordan Brand and Nike stockists to grab a pair of the Air Jordan 12 GS “University Blue” for $140.
