Hispanic or Latino Heritage Month kicked off on September 15th and it will be continue until October 15th. The Hispanic Heritage Month dates back to the 1960s, when President Lydon B. Johnson decided that an entire week should be dedicated to the celebration of Latino achievements and advancements. Eventually, the week was extended to a month-long celebration by Ronald Regan and all the presidents after have celebrated Latino Heritage Month ever since. There are many Central American countries that achieved independence in September, and that is why the date was chosen to kick off Latino Heritage Month. So, those Central American countries actually end up celebrating their independence days around the same time. For instance, Mexico celebrates its Independence Day right after Latino Heritage Month begins, i.e. on September 16th, 2017. As mentioned, this month-long celebration that symbolizes cultural pride for Hispanics is meant to highlight contributions that Latin Americans have made in the United States.
